Olive Tree at MUN..
After 3 years, we were really excited to be able to attend again the Model United Nations at the American School of Madrid.
Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations where students play the role of delegates from different countries and attempt to solve real-world issues using the policies and perspectives of their assigned country.
MUN has two phases- the first part is to research the country they represent and the topics they will be discussing in their committee. An opening speech plus resolutions for the topics need to be written before going to Madrid.
The Secondary pupils have been working hard researching their countries and issues, and writing their opening speeches. For three days they emulate important diplomatic figures trying to find solutions for the current issues the world is facing.
The second phase is the trip itself! An amazing experience for them!
So what was the best part of MUN?
Delivering the opening speech in front of everyone on the committee or being able to speak and make a point of what other countries were saying. Seeing all our students on the last day asking if we could do it again. And lastly, seeing how proud of what they accomplished they are.
Being in a huge room when the debate happens can be the scariest part of their time in Madrid, but at the same time invokes a feeling of being part of something bigger.
This year our students represented the more controversial countries such as North Korea, Belarus and Azerbaijan among others.
the young adults taking part in MUN learn how to debate and write in formal English, some great skills to have. They also learn what is happening around the world or what specific countries think about certain issues.
If you are wondering if your child should do MUN, the teachers who take them had this to say about this year’s event.
“It is the best experience for the young adults who want to see a change in the world. And really fun getting to know people from all around the world.”
