Model United Nations 2024

I have been taking children from The Olive Tree to MUN (Model United Nations) for 7 years now. I can just say that it is always the highlight of the year, and even after all this time, when the conference is over, I still get goose bumps.

What is MUN?

MUN is a simulation of a United Nations General Assembly where students become delegates of different countries and debate and analyze current issues like the Ukrainian war, regulation of Iran's nuclear weapons development or the Israeli/Palestine conflict. This program opens their eyes to the world and helps them to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, fostering a deeper understanding of global affairs.

What children find most difficult is to represent and defend ideas, which they might not necessarily agree with, from some rather controversial countries. They find it emotionally challenging to defend topics such as "Child labor" or "Gender inequality" but in exchange the experience enhances their resilience, leadership skills and confidence.

Every year Secondary pupils from Years 9 & 10 get the chance to be involved in MUN. It is an experience they never forget. Once they have been, many pupils want to go again the following year because they find it so inspiring. The second time, they find it easier of course. It’s great to see them developing their presentation and negotiating skills.

In March 2024 we took a group of 12 pupils to the annual MUN conference in Madrid. You can consult their official website here: https://uc3mun.anudi.org

This programs gives us some hope that the world will be in good hands in the future. This generation is eager to make things better. Let’s hope they do!

What the pupils say:

‘‘The first time I went to MUN I was quite nervous, but it was really fun in the end. The second time it was great. I represented India. It makes you see things from a different point of view, for sure.’’
