Managing coastal erosion

Armed with the knowledge that climate scientists forecast an acceleration of coastal erosion, Year 8 took on the task of planning a shoreline management plan; a project which combined many facets of geographical understanding including map skills, cost-benefit analyses and conflict management. Learners worked collaboratively, and with a restricted budget, to propose a plan for managing Europe’s most rapidly eroding coastline. To deepen their understanding of the implications of coastal management techniques such as groynes and riprap, Year 8 visited Sitges where they calculated rates of longshore drift and measured beach profiles.
