The students in Year 3 and 4 at the Olive Tree are using their “Making a Difference” topic in Enrichment this year to help make a real difference to the lives of people across the planet who do not have access to clean water. After watching a documentary on the subject the children have been inspired to raise money for this very worthy cause “Charity: Water”.

This charity helps to provide clean drinking water to the parts of the world that up until now have been sharing their water source with animals and disease. It gives the villages a water pump, allowing the women to work and the children, especially girls, to go to school. It helps to keep disease and sickness at a minimum by providing clean water to drink, to cook with and to wash with. The difference clean water makes is what has inspired us!

Charity: Water is also inspiring as a charity as it ensures that 100% of the donations are used for providing water to these areas and that all company costs are covered by other means. Once a donation has been made the charity keeps in contact to let you know where your money was spent, including a GPS location and photo, and how many people have been provided with clean water.

There are a number of ways to raise some money and after deliberation it was decided by Year 3 and 4 they will take part in a Sponsored Water Walk, where the children will walk as far as they can while carrying a 20 litre jerry-can of water, much as the people of these water-short areas have to do at least once a day.

We will host a presentation to grow knowledge on the issue, alongside an Art Exhibition inspired by Water. The art work will be on sale and will allow the public to walk away with a beautiful painting for their kind donations.

There will be a lemonade and cake stand to provide refreshments with all takings going to the charity.

Donations are welcome from now on our Olive Tree School Water Campaign page at:

https://my.charitywater.org/the-olive-tree/olive-tree-school-clean-water-campaign

We will also keep a running total on display in the reception window at school so you can keep track of how we are doing. Just so you know, for every 28€ raised 1 person gets clean water.

Dates and times for the Water Walk and Presentation/Art Exhibition will be announced shortly.

Together we can make a difference. Let’s help show our children how!
