A big welcome back to school tomorrow for a new Spring Term!
We hope you have had a lovely break and that the children are now full of energy for the classroom again.
A big thank you to those families who were able to go and help share some food and talk with the local homeless this Christmas. There were a few new faces on the streets so all your help was most welcome.
We also thank those families who gave toys and school supplies to the little school in South Africa. And we thank Alison and Alistair Johnson for taking these things to the children there.
A big thank you from the Klipfontein Primary School to the Olive Tree for the 50kg of books, stationery, toys and puzzles. Although they were on school holidays at the time, the headmaster, pictured below accepted it from us and couldn’t stop saying “Baie Dankie” – thank you so much! There were quite a lot of things there for their pre-primary which he said was awesome as their classroom was pretty empty and they can now add the books to their very tiny collection that they had before.
I have included pictures of the school that 200 children were in until a few months ago. The windows are broken as you can see, there is one tiny toilet for them all and it was unbelievably hot in the summer. The other tough thing was that the children had to cross a major highway each day from the village to get to the school. School absentee rates were a huge problem as a result.
The good news is that a new school has been built for them (on the right side of the road!) and they have just moved in. It is sparse but much better than before! The headmaster was telling us excitedly that they had desks arrive last week too which you can see in the first picture.
Each classroom still has an average of 42 children in it, however, for one teacher and not many resources and so any external support they get is very well received.
I should also mention that Alastair negotiated free excess baggage for all of this with the airline, so a big thanks to him!

We will shortly send out the list of after-school clubs that will be running this term. Some new ones coming up! You can sign up with Saray via email, or at the entrance hall table.
We will also be sending out the calendar once teachers have met this week and defined the main events and trips for the term.
Very much looking forward to seeing you all around school again!
